Motivation in Motion

Metro Moscow Worldwide creates radiant underground stations, artworks, and educational environments that stimulate civic pride by celebrating cultural, social, and corporate values, sports, industrial and military achievements, science, and the fine arts.

Founded in 1931 by Central Committee of the All-Union Communist Party, the firm has created 194 projects that are visited over 2 billion times each year.

MMW has expertise in all aspects of metro planning, design, and media. The firm offers comprehensive motivational messaging solutions, from a metro system's concept phase to its renovation and expansion.

The Moscow Metro is renowned for its aggressive approach to planning. From our earliest days, we have managed to defy expectations and overachieve: according to one famous story, in 1931 the British novelist Herbert Wells, upon learning of plans to build a metro in Moscow, urged his hosts to abandon their utopian dreaming and purchase 1000 British buses instead. George Morgan, an American engineering consultant brought in to assist in the construction of the Metro's first line, recommended that a brigade of new recruits slow down and be more careful. His warnings were dismissed and work progressed at its original high speed - and to deadline. When the project was eventually completed, Morgan explained that we was applying foreign practices to a Russian project and admitted that he had "underestimated human material." This legacy of bold projections, extreme effort, on-site improvisation, and breathtaking execution continues to this day.

The MMW design aesthetic is based on an organic and timeless merging of historic and modern approaches. Although our catalog contains many elements from the cultural past, MMW design is not about regurgitation. It is about the constant invention of new images to embody and transmit messages to audiences who are themselves always "in motion" as their cultural consciousness and aesthetic sensibilities evolve. Like our founders before us, we believe that a radiant metro should both encourage the best cultural practices and provide their ultimate reward.

At MMW we believe that metro interior design must incorporate the other arts, just as the great architectures of antiquity and the medieval period do, to give it maximum communicative potency. Our designs incorporate a huge range of aesthetics and artistic techniques, each carefully chosen to make the most of its motivational power. In conversation with our scriptwriters and client representatives, we define the ideal mix of media to achieve the feelings of optimism and radiance that are our hallmarks.
