Russia around the world

Archipelago Tours is the world's first provider of global study tours dedicated exclusively to Russian modern architecture.

All of our tours combine three essential elements: global destinations, expert guides, and financial support for the preservation of all sites visited.

With Archipelago Tours, an interest in Russian architecture becomes a passport to see the world.

Our tours honor the global contributions of Russian architects by celebrating their buildings as monuments and as environments, as works of engineering and works of art, and as vital components in their city’s mythos. Some tours follow particular themes, or even single architects, others survey a broader range of buildings, tracing the collective contribution of Russian designers to a country or region.

Our itineraries are original, imaginative, well-paced and carefully balanced. Thorough research and assiduous reconnaissance underpin the Archipelago Tour design process. Knowledge of the subject matter and the destination combine with meticulous attention to practical matters to ensure an enriching and thoroughly international Russian experience.

All of our small-group tours are led by expert lecturers, chosen for their companionability and communication skills as well as their scholarship. Academics, architects, curators, broadcasters and researchers, they are selected not only for their knowledge but also for their ability to communicate that learning to a lay audience. Their brief is to enlighten and stimulate, not merely to inform. Through a combination of deep Russian architectural knowledge and local cultural insight they offer intimate understanding of how each destination fits into a larger story of Russian modern design and to the physical, political, and social development of its host city.

Archipelago Tours is committed to Responsible Tourism. Every tour booked supports the cause of Russian architecture financially, contributing vital funds to support our mission to increase public knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of Russia's contribution to architecture abroad. Many of the masterpieces we visit are in poor condition and need maintenance. The local government may not be willing or able to pay for it, so lovers of these buildings must protect them by visiting. We ensure that a portion of the cost of every tour is directed to preserving the sites visited. In this way we are working to ensure that Russia's global modern architectural presence will remain strong for generations to come.
